With the New Year rolling out quickly it’s important that getting our health sorted is at the top of our list of priorities. If you’re like most people, you have made one or more resolutions for the New 2019, such as stopping smoking, watching what you eat or exercising more. All of these are great ways to take charge of your health. Here’s one more: Call your doctor today to schedule an annual checkup for you and your family! Don’t let illness sneak up on you.

Tet Holidays (aka Vietnamese Lunar New Year" as great a time of the year, this festive season is always a fun-filled time with family, friends and food. It can also be tough to stay healthy without feeling like you’re depriving yourself. Amidst the endless gatherings and tempting goodies, it is easy for us to let our hair down and indulge in whatever is presented to us.

An annual checkup allows your doctor to review the status of your health. It is a chance to find health problems early, when they may be easier to treat. Your annual checkup also gives you the chance to talk to your doctor about health concerns and to ask questions you may have. It may help to write down your questions and concerns beforehand and review them during your office visit.

Start your year off the right way by calling your doctor’s office today and scheduling appointments for you and your family.

This sets the agenda for a healthier year ahead and ensures we don’t miss getting organized with any health appointments we need to make. Some areas to make sure we have checked in the New Year include:

  • Measure your cholesterol. Starting at age 20, all adults should have their cholesterol tested every five years recommended by USA Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A cholesterol test is a simple blood test. The results give you measurement of LDL cholesterol. Less than 100 mg/dL is considered normal. LDL is sometimes called “bad” cholesterol, because it can build up and clog your arteries, eventually leading to heart disease or stroke, and likewise can be elevated in the absence of any symptoms. This is not purely a disorder of overweight people like some may think, high blood cholesterol doesn’t have symptoms; so healthy individuals don’t know their levels are high. That’s why it’s so important to have your cholesterol checked.
  • Get your blood pressure checked at least once every two years. High blood pressure increases risks of heart and kidney disease, stroke, and preeclampsia in pregnancy. It is important to have this checked, ideally at each appointment with your doctor, as it may be elevated without you experiencing any symptoms. If your blood pressure is higher than 135/80 or you take medicine for high blood pressure, you should get screened for diabetes.
  • Get screen for Diabetes. After the age of 40, you should have your blood sugar screened every three years. However, if you have any of the risk factors, you should start screening at 35, and obviously if you have any symptoms, get checked straight away.

Our Senior GP, Dr. Do Duc Tin is committed to health screening explained:“Tragically, I see too many people die needlessly because disease is detected far too late for one of a few simple tests. The holiday season is particularly busy with errands, party prep and shopping. Healthy holiday eating is a battle on two fronts, with indulgent food options at home and at parties. From sugar-rich snacks to buffets and multi-course meals, New Year time is a minefield for eating well. In addition, Pollution (Water, Air, Chemicals) and even Toxic chemicals can also get into the food in a variety of situations that are damaging our health a little more every breath. Many thousands of people die unnecessarily every year from diseases that could have been treated if diagnosed early enough. And the best way to diagnose disease early, usually before symptoms have even presented, is through regular health screening."

"The beginning of the New Year is a time when many people resolve to improve aspects of their health and lifestyle. Many will resolve to improve their diet, either because they want to reduce their weight, or because they want to improve their nutritional health. Before long New Year holidays are an ideal time to visit your doctor. If you’ve been neglecting your health check-ups, make a New Year’s Resolution to visit your health care provider from time to time, even if you are healthy. The purpose of these visits is to: screen for medical issues, assess your risk for future medical problems; encourage a healthy lifestyle; update vaccinations and help you get to know your provider in case of an illness."continued Dr. Do Duc Tin.

Dr. Do Duc Tin also shared"Over the years our health checks have saved lives as patients have discovered they have the early stages of disease. It is not easy finding out you have a life-threatening illness, but not finding out will almost certainly be a lot worse. Routine health checks and early diagnosis can stop some of the biggest killers from claiming lives – including heart disease, prostate cancer, cervical cancer and breast cancer.

In both men and women a simple blood test can detect liver and kidney disease, anaemia, infection, high cholesterol and diabetes to name a few. The latter two, especially when in combination with high blood pressure, are major risk factors for heart attacks and stroke. An ECG can tell us a lot about the heart, including potentially dangerous abnormal rhythms. It can even detect heart problems."
