In Vietnam, lung cancer is a very common disease, common in men, especially among smokers. Screening for lung cancer will help patients have the opportunity to cure and treat their disease early, and avoid death.

About 80% of patients are detected in the late stage (III - IV), only about 20% of patients are detected early (I - II). Lung cancer patients do not live more than 5 years after diagnosis. Despite progress in diagnosis and treatment, only 18% of lung cancer patients are still alive for 5 years after being diagnosed. Lung cancer is diagnosed in a very late stage, mostly in the stage of the disease has spread. Early detection stage is low, most cannot intervene with surgery (due to distant metastasis, too indicated for surgery).

Screening for early detection of lung cancer.

Symptoms of lung cancer:

When the patient often has bloody coughs, prolonged cough, weight loss, chest pain, persistent hoarseness, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing. Lung cancer symptoms are nonspecific.

Why is lung cancer diagnosed late?

Currently, most patients with lung cancer have no symptoms. In the lungs, there are no sensory nerves, so the pain that the patient feels is due to metastasis (pleura, chest wall, bone, lymph node ...). In this situation, lung cancer screening is a method to help early diagnosis of lung cancer, to intervene and treat early, helping patients get rid of this dangerous disease. Low raw lung MSCT is an approved method that can help screen for lung cancer. Research in the US shows that low-dose lung MSCT scan reduces the risk of death from lung cancer by about 20% in the age group 55 to 74 who smoked 30 packs-years (1 pack / day x five x 30 years). . Low-dose lung MSCT scan prevents 1 out of 5 deaths from lung cancer.

Advantages of low dose pulmonary CT:

The radiation dose is about 1/5 of the usual CT scan dose.
Detect better small lesions, lesions in undetectable positions on routine lung radiographs.
Helps to make a more accurate assessment of the chest wall (soft, bone) and mediastinum.

Treatment of lung cancer at City International Hospital

Each year, City International Hospital visits and treats hundreds of lung cancer cases. According to Master, Doctor Hoang Chan Phuong - General Internal Medicine, working at City International Hospital: “City International Hospital is equipped with 128-slice MSCT scanner. The Olympus bronchoscopy has a cancer screening function with the new Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) technology: uses a blue light with a wavelength of 540 nm which is different from the white light of this conventional scanner, this blue light. are absorbed by hemoglobin for early detection of vascular proliferation or abnormal vascular networks of bronchial mucosa in precancerous lesions and local stage bronchial cancers it is still very early ”.

Screening for lung cancer with low-dose CT lung helps detect lung damage at an early stage and helps increase survival. In addition, people should quit smoking to help increase the rate of lung cancer and contribute to protecting the environment for public health.
