A patient underwent a successful Microvascular Decompression surgery of Trigeminal Neuralgia and showed improvement in all of her Neuropathic pain symptoms.

A 50 year old female was referred to our practice with complaints of hypersomnia, snoring, slurred speech and sleep apnea for more diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Her brain MRI was significant for a vascular loop compression on medulla oblongata. The patient underwent microvascular decompression surgery subsequently and showed improvement in all of her symptoms.

According to Patient H.L, she had suffered from right side pain for many years. Initially the medication decreased but then the drug gradually stopped working. Ms. H.L had been admitted to another hospital for treatment by thermonuclear fusion procedure of the tria nerve, after a while the pain returned. A year ago, she suffered from severe insomnia. One day she sleeps very little, some days awake all day and night, accompanied by symptoms of right-sided electric shock, especially when touching her face.

"I was always in a hot temper, even though she is not angry or worried. Iwas still on medication, but the condition did not improve, even when increasing the dose to her she became very uncomfortable dizziness. Unbearable, I decided to go to City International Hospital for thorough examination and treatment." said Ms. H.L.

The patient MR Imaging reveals a Resistance Trigeminal Neuralgia

October 18, 2019,  Patient H.L was admitted to City International Hospital. After a thorough medical history and careful examination, an MRI scan of the doctor diagnosed the patient with Trigeminal neuralgia that causes sudden, severe, brief, stabbing recurrent episodes of facial pain in one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve and sleep disorder. After the consultation, at 9:00 am on October 19, 2019, the Neurosurgeons performed  operated on the patient with the method of "Microchial Decompression Surgery".

After successful surgery, the patient recovered, had a good sleep and no longer felt the pain in his face. The patient was discharged on October 25, 2019.

Neurosurgeon Le Trong Nghia, II MD Department of Neurosurgery City International Hospital, who performed the surgery shared that the pain of the trigeminal neuralgia (or V nerve) has very basic properties. characterized by sudden pain, short bouts of few seconds to several dozen seconds, with cycles. Pain properties such as cuts, glare, or an electric shock. In addition to the patient pain as usual. Pain can occur in any area that governs the sensation of the V-nerve on the face. However, the most common area is the upper jaw and the lower jaw branch with severe tooth pain. The pain may be triggered by activities such as chewing, swallowing, washing the face, brushing your teeth, the wind blowing in the face, or there is no specific irritation in the face. So far the cause of this pathology has been proven to be caused by the V nerve being pinched by one or more branches of blood vessels inside the brain.

Dr Le Trong Nghia during Patient visit

When having the above symptoms, patients should visit the hospitals with specialized internal medicine - Neurosurgery to be carefully examined by doctors and conduct brain MRI surveys to accurately diagnose the disease. such as eliminating cases of V nerve pain that result from other diseases such as brain tumor, cerebrovascular malformation ...

Depending on the specific case, the doctor will advise appropriate treatment. Surgical intervention only occurs when patients do not respond to drug therapy or take medications that cause many side effects and greatly affect the quality of life, Dr. Nghia explained.

This surgical technique, called neurosurgery is one of the most effective treatments for primary V nerve pain, the goal is to separate the blood vessel from the V nerve. releases nerves from pinching. The surgery helps to solve the cause, the effectiveness is long, the rate of regrowth is low ... However, the technique requires specialized modern surgical instruments such as neurosurgery glasses, sophisticated instruments for sports. under the glass ... and the expertise of the team of doctors.
