Doctor speaks with patient If you have symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or heartburn, you may have an issue in your upper gastrointestinal tract. In some cases, your doctor can utilize a procedure called an upper endoscopy to get a detailed view of your esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) in order to make a diagnosis.

In this article, the gastroenterologists at City International Hospital will explain what’s involved with an upper endoscopy as well as its benefits.

What is an upper endoscopy?

This procedure is also known as an EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) and utilizes an endoscope – a long, flexible tube with a tiny camera at the end of it.  It enables your doctor to closely examine the lining of your esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, providing a better view than an X-ray can in these areas of the body.

An EGD not only allows your doctor to see these areas to diagnose a condition but in some cases, your doctor can also treat certain issues during the procedure.

When is an upper endoscopy performed?

This procedure is often performed to identify the presence of or cause of the following:

  • Abdominal or chest pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Heartburn
  • Bleeding
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Inflammation
  • Ulcers
  • Tumors
  • Celiac disease

In addition, your doctor can perform the following during an EGD:

  • Obtain a small tissue sample of a suspicious area to confirm or rule out the presence of cancer (biopsy)
  • Remove polyps
  • Stretch narrowed esophageal areas
  • Treat bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal area
  • Remove food or another object that’s interfering with swallowing
  • Treat ulcers

What is involved with an upper endoscopy?

You’ll need to talk to your gastroenterologist about any major health issues you have, such as heart or lung disease. If you have these health concerns, special attention may be needed during the procedure, and you may need to take antibiotics before the procedure.

Also discuss your medications with your doctor so you’ll know whether to take them or adjust their dosage before your EGD.

You’ll be asked to not eat or drink for about eight hours before your procedure. Before it begins, you’ll be sedated so you’ll feel no discomfort.

Your doctor will guide the endoscope into your mouth, through your esophagus and into your stomach to examine areas of concern. The procedure usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, but it may take longer if your doctor performs a biopsy or another procedure during your EGD. You’ll be able to go home afterward but will need someone to drive you.

Your doctor will discuss the results with you and determine any follow-up treatment that may be needed.

What are the benefits of an upper endoscopy?

An upper endoscopy offers the following benefits:

  • The procedure is fast and you’ll be comfortable throughout
  • It allows your doctor to diagnosis problems so you can begin treatment if needed
  • In some cases, your doctor can correct issues during the procedure
  • It can be recorded for later examination or comparison to a follow-up test
  • An EGD provides a more detailed view of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum than an X-ray can provide
