Causes of dementia

According to Associate Professor Nguyen Thi Hung, Medical Director, senior neurologist, the causes of dementia have many causes, inherited, effects from alzheimer's disease, brain stroke, parkinsonism, inflation. use of sedatives, antidepressants ... for a long time. The disease usually appears in the elderly but is not a normal aging process but a pathology that needs to be diagnosed and treated early.

Explaining why the disease is increasing, Dr. Hung explained, because the world's population is getting older, the elderly are better cared for, so the survival rate is high. Besides, current medicine is very developed, there are many technical means to help screening diseases. In addition to the lifestyle in a civilized society and a developing country, the detection of neurological diseases in general and dementia in particular in the elderly is very large.

Diseases such as diabetes, diabetes, blood fat ... are the risk leading to stroke, dementia, Alzheimer's (memory loss) ...

Dementia patients need care and care from relatives and family.

Symptoms of dementia

Symptoms manifested through several stages.

Mild stage: patients may suffer from short-term memory impairment, mood swings, ease of anger and agitation.

Moderate stage: patients have difficulty in bathing, dressing, personal hygiene; loss of ability to acquire new information, disorientation of space and time. Patients may experience haunted paranoia, unjustly attacking other people.

Severe stage: the patient loses all ability to live, totally dependent on the caregiver. The ill person does not recognize family members, unable to walk. Complications of the terminal stage are exhaustion, malnutrition, pneumonia and pressure ulcers.

In fact, signs of disease are often overlooked, if detected, have entered the stage of moderate or severe. Identifying and preventing the causes of disease is very important, helping to reduce bad effects and also helping the treatment process to be more effective and cost-effective.

How to prevent and treat dementia?

For patients diagnosed with dementia, in addition to using drugs to treat cognitive symptoms, mental behavior disorders, proper care of patients, practicing cognitive function training An important part in restoring and improving the quality of life for patients. In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to the treatment of combination diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, parkinson ... when treating people with dementia.

"This disease requires perseverance of the family. The disease cannot be cured in a short time but needs to be taken regularly for the recovery process and the quality of life of the patient is better," Dr. Hung recommended.

Dementia can be improved if detected early and intervened properly, and need to improve the understanding and prevention of disease in the community. For the elderly, should eat a balanced, well-balanced diet, avoiding foods high in fat, sugar and salt. Strengthen sports practice, play intellectual games, participate in social activities, live happily and optimistically.
