During the holiday season you’re going to be exposed to allergens. Be aware of where the problems lie so you can deal with them. And then, have a good time!

Holiday gatherings are festive fun, but it’s not easy to be the life of the party when you re sniffling, sneezing and wheezing. From the host s overpowering perfume to the nuts in the snack bowl, holiday parties can be a challenge for people with allergies and asthma.

The time of seasonal transition increases the risk of acquiring respiratory diseases. The most common one is respiratory infection. It  can be identified into 2 types:

  • Upper respiratory tract infection: including sore throat, sinusitis ... these diseases are more common and easier to treat.
  • Lower respiratory tract infection: including Pneumonia, bronchial asthma, acute bronchitis ... when this disease is acquired, it often gets worse and requires a long-term treatment.

Respiratory infection risk factors

According to Dr. Nguyen Nhu Vinh, Head of the Department of Respiratory Function – University Medical Center (Benh vien Dai hoc Y duoc), he shared: “When the season changes, weather and air humidity change erratically. This is a favorable environment for viruses and bacteria that cause severe respiratory infections, to work actively.

Children under age of 6 and the elderly with low immune system, are most likely to get infected with respiratory diseases when the weather changes. Besides, external factors such as air pollution, cigarette smoke, working environment, etc. are also the causes making respiratory infections rapidly grow.

Recognizing respiratory infections

Respiratory infection is not an individual disease but a combination of flu, rhinitis, sore throat, sinusitis, bronchitis... Symptoms of respiratory infection are a high fever above 39°C, accompanied by a runny nose and constantly sneezing. Later, the patients will have nasal discharge, chest tightness, aches, hoarseness, short incubation period and fast expression speed.

Commonly, these diseases will go away on their own after 6-7 days, sometimes even longer, depending on each person's conditions. However, for sensitive subjects such as young children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems, this disease can cause many dangerous complications. In case the situation lasts more than three weeks, you must come to see a doctor and identify the disease as soon as possible.

Prevention is always better than treatments

As Dr. Nguyen Nhu Vinh said, “respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, pneumonia, flu, ... if they are not detected and handled early, many dangerous complications will occur, such as acute respiratory failure, pneumonia, lung abscess, pneumothorax, pleural effusion, which can lead to death.

Children under 6 years old often have an incomplete immune system, so the risk of acquiring respiratory disease is very high. Thus, when parents see children with unusual signs, it’s necessary to take them to the nearest medical units for timely treatment. In addition, children need to be fully vaccinated, especially respiratory diseases.

For adults, weather changes increase the chance of acquiring chronic respiratory diseases. These diseases are more common in adults than in children. According to Dr. Duong Anh Phuong, Department of General Internal Medicine, City International Hospital Ho Chi Minh City, she explained that due to subjectivity, many people with symptoms still do not seek medical care.

"Most patients who detect dangerous respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, are often not received early diagnosis until the 50s of their lives. Even though the disease has begun to affect them from the age of 35 and older, "said Dr. Phuong.

In addition to the basic treatments, experts recommend that the following tips can help you prevent acute bronchitis and respiratory diseases:

  • Avoid contact with stimulants such as cigarette smoke; wear masks when you going out and avoid direct contact with slightly strong gas chemicals.
  • Eat enough, especially green vegetables to provide enough vitamins to help the body fight against disease.
  • Drink enough water is a way to compensate for the loss of water through respiration and skins into a cold and dry environment.
  • Vaccinate to increase the overall immune system to prevent the risk of respiratory diseases.
  • See a respiratory specialist when you see abnormal signs for timely and correct treatments, and avoid spreading your diseases to other people around you.
