On April 20, 2021, City International Hospital (CIH) successfully treated a patient N.X.H, 35 years old, with a herniated disc L5 / S1 by means of a dialysis surgery. With the application of ERAS model, the patient's health recovered well and appeared early on 04/21/2021.

MRI scan of patient's spine

Dr Le Trong Nghia, Department of Neurology - Spine, the doctor directly operating the patient said that before that, the patient's health was completely normal, without any abnormal signs. About 1 month before surgery, the patient suffered from pain in the lower back, buttocks and left leg. Increasing pain does not accompany much restriction of movement. The patient went to a doctor and took painkillers but the condition did not go away. 2 days before the surgery, the patient had difficulty walking, his feet were slightly weak. At City International Hospital, after visiting with the neuropsychiatrist, the patient was assigned an MRI scan and the necessary subclinical tests. The results showed that patient H. had spondylolisthesis and left S1 root disc herniation. The patient decided to be hospitalized for intervention surgery as indicated.

After surgery, the patient is awake, has good contact, has a quick recovery, can move around and move normally and discharge the hospital the next day - April 21, 2021.

Sharing about the possibility of early recovery and discharge from hospital, Dr. Nghia said that the hospital has applied ERAS procedure in spinal surgery. ERAS (short for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) is a treatment process that combines many steps from preoperative preparation, surgical technique and postoperative treatment to help patients recover better. Patients are consulted in clear detail and thoughtfully prepared about the entire treatment process. The surgery took place at 15:30 on April 20, 2021 and lasted 1 hour and 30 minutes by means of microsurgery to remove the disc nucleus. This is a method widely applied in Vietnam and around the world in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation.

Dr. Nghia recommends that people suffer from diseases of the cervical spine, lumbar spine such as: disc herniation, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis ... if treated with medical drugs, rehabilitation after 1 to 2 months does not decrease or decrease, but after a period of time, it is necessary to see the neurosurgery specialist to be examined and prescribe early surgery to avoid complications such as: atrophy of the leg, limbs are paralyzed and unable to walk. When the disease progresses, the treatment process is more difficult and expensive.

According to statistics of the Ministry of Health, lumbar spinal disc herniation currently in our country accounts for a relatively high rate. 80% of the population has at least a period of back pain, up to 30% of the population has this disease and is on a rejuvenation trend, usually between the age of 25-55 years. In addition, many patients often detect the disease too late and treat it incorrectly, leading to the disease can recur many times and worsen, lose the ability to move. Therefore, patients need to recognize early symptoms of disc herniation to have early and timely treatment, to avoid causing complications affecting mobility, reducing quality of life.

There are many causes of disc herniation such as: frequently carrying heavy objects on the neck, back; The wrong position to carry and deflect the disc, because many patients have a habit of standing and bending to suddenly lift heavy objects instead of sitting down to carry heavy objects and then slowly standing up, which easily causes spinal injuries. and affecting the disc, in addition to spinal cord injuries after traffic accidents; Occupational accidents can also cause disc herniation.

Another common cause is disc herniation caused by degenerative spinal cord as we age. When the ligament layers and fibrous rings (similar to articular cartilage) age, structural changes, bone spikes appear. With the impact and pressure of the body, the fibrous ring of the disc will tear and the inner core will escape, causing pressure on the nerves and spinal cord.
