Dr. Nguyen Phuc Lam - Head of Endoscopy Department, City International Hospital

Most Vietnamese people find themselves struggling with some types of gastrointestinal diseases such as gastritis, Helicobacter pylori ((H. pylori), Esophageal reflux, Colitis ... Did you know that these diseases are treatable, although many people are still too reluctant to get a simple medical checkup. These delays actually worsen the case into a severely untreatable scenarios or gastrointestinal cancer. This type of cancer is the hidden danger because there are no clear signs or symptoms until there’s no way to cure it.

Statistically speaking, in Vietnam GI cancer accounts for a high proportion of cancers (about 20%), while colorectal cancer accounts for 10% to 15%. Stomach and colon cancer is more common than any other Organ System Diseases. However with early detection, treating the disease would NOT be a problem. Therefore, preventive health screening plays such an important role. Modern equipment such as ultrasound, CT or MRI are effective and affordable in diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases (esophagus, stomach, duodenum, colon, rectum), X-ray Baryte (with contrast) may be used in some cases but not as safe and accurate comparing to endoscopy.

Up to these present days, GI endoscopy is considered the safest, most non-irritating, most accurate and most effective way to diagnose gastrointestinal disease. Visual inspection on the scanner helps the doctor clearly see any abnormalities inside the gastrointestinal tract. From there you can diagnose and advise on appropriate treatments.
