July 23, 2018, City International Hospital in collaboration with Westcoast International Dental Clinic has successfully provided advance oral care for a young Australian patient Jennifer Pham who is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Dental care to regular children wouldn’t be such a challenge, but it does to children with autism, in this situation what is routinely oral care for other children would be a lot more complex and yet complicated for Autistic Children as well as the caring routine needs to be provided by a team in the hospital.

Jennifer and her father are being advised and carefully consulted Before Surgery and Anesthesia

Jennifer Pham, 15, was diagnosed with autism since the age of three. Although the family is very careful and focused when it comes to her oral care, still the family has many difficulties in order to put her into a dental care routine is not something you can do at home, especially as she’s getting older, her routine in oral care seemingly is becoming the entire family’s serious problem.

Discuss with Dr. Andrew H.F.Tsang, General Director of Westcoast International Dental Clinic, he shared:"I would say there are two big challenges when we think about treating this special need child. The first is actually the child is quite scared. The father taking her to the hospital to get this treatment and often make the child very reluctant to come and as you can see Jennifer is not a small child so knowing the procedure on how to sedate to do the blood test and doing it in the most compassionate and gentle way is really a team based approach. That’s the first big challenge to us and second is the parent. Jennifer’s parents are really understanding and really willing to do this because often it’s much easier to ignore or not doing this procedure, and they understood because they’ve done this general anesthesia before, as to some parents they may feel this is not necessary or it something they rather look away and not do. But I think it’s a very worthwhile general health treatment for special needs kids.”

Dr. John L. Lucas, Chief Executive Officer of City International Hospital

Speaking to us at City International Hospital, Dr. John L. Lucas, Chief Executive Officer kindly shared: “This 15 year-old patient with long –term autism who has all of the challenges of maintaining a good oral health. One of the things we like to see as parents is that a child having a smile on their face because it conveys that they’re happy and they’re trusting. We’re very pleased that West Coast had chosen us at the site to bring the patient to and we appreciate the trust West Coast has in us and for the trust that the family has in us to take care of this very special patient.

After the procedure, Mr. Pierre Pham, Jennifer’s father expressed: “Her everyday routines always seem like a big challenge for her in order to independently carry them throughout the day such as showering, maintain personal hygiene or brushing teeth… that’s why as parents, we don’t mind to support her on that at all. As she’s growing up now in her teen age years, we focus more on helping her out with daily oral care routines as well as her overall well-being. We’re also well aware of those oral problems, once they occur; they will quickly link to firstly Eating Problems with chewing or swallowing, aesthetic concerns as well as other diseases. I am very grateful for the collaboration between City International Hospital and Westcoast International Dental Clinic as well as their enthusiastic care and treatment for my daughter. That means a lot to us and I hope that in the future, they will continuously cooperate, care and successfully treat many other cases."

Dr. John Lucas added “We think there’s a good future for our collaborative work with West Coast Dental Clinic and this is the first experience we’re having with them on a patient like this. We believe everything will go very well, will go perfectly and they want to keep bringing these patients back to us as we continue to build bridges of  love and beautiful bright smiles for everyone”
